Pensione Esperanza

  Pensione Esperanza, a 110 unit SRO (single room occupancy) near downtown San Jose, was completed in 1999. The development serves very low income individuals, mainly those working in the downtown service industries. In addition, ten of the units are set aside for Shelter Plus Care clients. The development meets a critical housing need in the downtown area as well as provide a landmark building at the downtown gateway along Bird Avenue. This development has received numerous awards including, an Honorable Mention in the metropolitan-urban category of the 2000 Affordable Housing Tax Credit Excellence Award from the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition in Washington D.C, an Affordable Award in the 21st annual Builder’s Choice in 2001, and an Affordable Grand Award in the 2002 Residential Architect Design Awards. The development was also published in the December 2000 issue of Architectural Record.
